The track to Dakhla oasis, the 'Dharb el Dakhla' makes use of an unusual sand free expanse of iron pyrite crystals. This section of the route is easily found and consistently passible - an obvious choice for the Dahkar - Cairo race as which the Beduoin claimed left the tracks.
