The City of The Dead
On the eastern side of Cairo there is an immense cemetery known to foreigners as the "City of the Dead." To Egyptians it is simply the cemetery, an active, city-like grid with a wild labyrinth of tombs, pantheons, mausoleums, and markers in which nearly a million people live out their existence. Forced from crowed ghettos, lured from the villages in search of work, and permitted by a fascinating cultural heritage these people have found themselves trapped but at home, living among the graves of their ancestors.
